Before I dive into the answer to this -very good! – question about whether everyone needs a book coach, here is a piece I wrote about what book coaching is and how it is beneficial to writers.
So, does every writer need a book coach?
Some may say ‘YES!’ because our work helps writers in so many different ways.
But I would disagree.
Different People, Different Needs
Everyone is different. Every writer has different needs. Each writer works best differently.
Each writer is at a different stage in their writing journey.
When You Would Not Need A Book Coach
- You have no trouble coming up with story ideas
- You have no trouble coming up with story ideas
- As a writer, you are good at creating characters, their backstories and their arc of change in the story
- You have no trouble coming up with story ideas
- Writing both a story’s external and internal plot is a strength of yours
- You can motivate yourself to do the writing and you have the discipline to keep writing
- You like working on your story by yourself and figuring everything out on your own
When You Would Need A Book Coach
- You struggle to expand your story ideas into a novel-length book foundation
- You need accountability to work on your story or your manuscript
- As a writer, you need a second pair of eyes on your work to make sure it works
- You need reassurance about your writing abilities and your story
- You like talking to others about writing
- In your writing life, you like to brainstorm with a story expert
- You want to get better at writing
- You would like support from a professional story expert and certified coach
- As the pro author of your work, you see your storytelling weaknesses and want to improve them
Walk Your Own Path
No matter what type of writer you are, there is a path for you.
Whether you walk it alone, or prefer guidance along the way or only for certain elements: you are a writer and your story matters!
